Groundwater Replenishment Trial to demonstrate indirect potable reuse in Perth, Western Australia

With increased climate variability resulting in decreased availability of freshwater in Western Australia, alternate climate-independent sources are being pursued by the Water Corporation. One such source is indirect potable reuse via groundwater replenishment. A three year Groundwater Replenishment Trial is being undertaken by the Corporation to assess the feasibility of groundwater replenishment focussing on three main objectives: 1. Development of policy and regulation 2. Demonstration of technical feasibility 3. Undertaking community and stakeholder engagement These objectives are not unusual to recycling projects in Australia. This paper will outline the aspects of each of these objectives which were approached uniquely, particularly the use of Recycled Water Quality Indicators and Treatment Performance Indicators to assure treatment performance and water quality, reducing the amount of compliance monitoring required. The paper will present local data of treatment performance and community attitudes in Perth, Western Australia.
