Overbased Calcium Sulfonate (OBCS) Grease has received growing attention in recent years especially in the North America Market. It's production has grown more than three folds from 1.3% in 2009 to 5.4% in 2012, according to a recent NLGI survey. Today, despite a great deal being known about how to produce good quality OBCS grease, its production remains in the hands of only a few grease manufacturers. It is also known that OBCS grease has an inherent tendency toward rheological changes (softening and hardening) attributed to its unique thickener network. In 2012 at the NLGI annual conference we presented an OBCS grease that provided greatly improved high temperature and rheological performance. Today's presentation shall focus on the production of OBCS grease with high temperature and rheological stability and the use of a new family of alkylated naphthalene base oils that exhibit outstanding solvency and great color stability.
