Fast photograph and OES study on dynamics of IR laser produced metal plasma in air

Laser produced plasma has various applications including superconducting films fabrication, laser induced breakdown spectroscopy, micro-machining, nanoparticles formation, etc. However, it is a rather complex process, involving lots of correlated physical and chemical interactions among the target, the laser, the plume plasma, and the ambient gas, and calls for more comprehensive researches. In this work, we focused on the dynamics of the nanosecond laser ablated plasma within and after the laser pulse irradiation, and discussed the effects of experimental parameters on plasma dynamics using fast photography technique and optical emission spectroscopy (OES). Comprehensive experiments were carried out using a Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm 15 ns) in the open air. Different experimental parameters, including target materials (copper, aluminum, and stainless steel), laser energies, the laser spot sizes and laser incident angle, were investigated.
