It is well-known that operation faults of power transformer occurs in the event of partial discharge (PD) phenomenon. Therefore, it is essential to perform research on the live detection and localization technology for PD in power transformers so as to ensure the security and stability of power system. The principle and characteristics of PD detection technology for power transformers are described herein. Four kinds of commonly used PD detection techniques, the pulse current method, the ultrasonic method, the UHF method and the HF current method, are introduced. The localization method of PD in transformers is analyzed then to explore how to choose the optimal PD detection method under different circumstances.
