Initiatives in Bonded Ship Structural Repairs

Many ships with aluminum superstructures have experienced degradation through sensitization of the aluminum that has caused extensive stress-corrosion cracking. Overlays of glass reinforced plastic on the decks of these ships have been made by NSWCCD with the initial results being satisfactory to date. Kits for bonding aluminum patches to cracked aluminum structure have been developed and distributed to fleet units. An experimental program has begun to understand better the ability of these temporary repairs to provide longer-term solutions and to develop methods of bonding composites and aluminum to aluminum structure for temporary and permanent repairs.
