Experiments on pressure infiltration of aluminum melts in loose beds of hollow spherical fly ash particles (average size 150 (μm) have been conducted to fabricated aluminum matrix syntactic foams. The threshold pressure and the length infiltrated are expressed in terms of the particle size, the particle volume fraction, particles wall thickness, the melt viscosity, the particle temperature, and the surface tension of the melt. The calculated value of the threshold pressure for spherical hollow particles at a particle temperature of 250°C is 39kPa compared to the experimentally observed values around 35 kPa. The infiltration length is expressed as a function of applied pressure, the contact angles between the particle and the melt, and the temperature of the melt front for infiltration of molten aluminum in a bed consisting of hollow spherical particles.
