Reduction of Side-Effects of Orlistat by Orlistat-Chitosan Composition (OCC) in Mice.

Orlistat, pancrease inhibitor used for the treatment of obesity, can cause steatorrhea, side-effects having oily stool. We prepared orlistat-chitosan compositions (OCC) to reduce the side effects orlistat. Positively charged chitosan solution, especially high molecular weight chitosan, dispersed negatively charged oil droplets which further formed gel-like mass with bile salt. Efficacy and side-effects of the compositions were evaluated by quantifying the amount of oil in the feces and smeared in the hair after orally feeding oil and OCC to mice. While total amount of oil in the excrement remain unchanged, OCC helped contain oil in the feces when compared to orlistat alone.
