Salmon calcitonin as a potential therapeutic for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis

Prolonged or inappropriate inflammatory responses contribute to the pathogenesis of disease including arthritis. Nuclear receptor NR4A2 is a key regulator in the progression of osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), making it a potential therapeutic target to disrupt the inflammatory process. Our studies show that salmon calcitonin (sCT) and sCT in a PEGylated format down regulates NR4A2 and metalloproteinases in human chrondrocytes and could therefore be a novel potential therapeutic for the treatment of arthritis.
