The effects of RDX-based explosives on laminates made from carbon-fibre/epoxy and glass-fibre/epoxy were measured. In all cases where no attenuating insulation was present holes were created together with associated delaminations. When attenuating material was placed between the explosive and the laminate for masses of explosive of up to 25 g, holes were not created. However, when the effect of the mass of explosive (50 g) overmatched the strength of the laminate, the extent of damage was increased when attenuating material was present. Comparing the damage created in glass fibre laminates and that found in carbon fibre laminates for a given amount of explosive, the glass fibre showed more extensive delamination and a correspondingly larger hole. The petalling seen in aluminium alloy sheet when explosives are detonated close by was not seen in the case of these polymer matrix composite laminates.
