SEM Tunnel Herrschaftsbuck: A Geological Challenge in Germany's Southwest

The Herrschaftsbucktunnel is located near the city of Rheinfelden (Germany) close to the swiss border. This highway tunneling project with two tunnels and a length of approximately 480 meters is excavated by applying the new Austrian tunneling method (NATM). Due to the geological situation and a cross section of 160 m~2 in the southern tunnel, it was required to make use of a complex exploratory drilling program.The paper describes the challenges of constructing this NATM Tunnel in difficult geological conditions, low overburden and big cross sections.
