CONSTRUCTION OF THE POWERHOUSE CAVERN FOR THE PUMPED STORAGE SCHEME KOPS II IN AUSTRIA

In the period between November 2004 and December 2005 (13 months) a total volume of 125,000 m~3 was excavated in the power house and the transformer cavern. The excavation works for the tunnels and shafts-all in all 1,782 m-were performed in parallel to the excavation works for the caverns and amounted to a total of 78,000 m~3. The performance level attained with respect to the lining works is also quite remarkable, as is illustrated by the fact that in the period from December 2005 to May 2007 (1.5 years) 48,000 m~3 of concrete were installed in the cavern. The numerous lining and backfilling works in the tunnels, shafts and other auxiliary structures were carried out simultaneously with the concreting works in the cavern. This outstanding accomplishment was only made possible by an intense work preparation throughout the project implementation period and by the strong commitment of all specialists involved. At peak times, the number of skilled workers on site was in the range of approx. 130. All works were performed continuously in day and night shifts, only interrupted by the traditional Christmas and Easter holiday.
