A NEW PERMANENT ESD AND CORROSION RESISTANT REACTIVE BARRIER PACKAGING MATERIAL

A new active barrier material for electrostatic discharge (ESD) and corrosion protection has been developed. These new materials are called reactive polymers (trade name Corrosion Intercept? and Static Intercept?) They consist of a blend of polymer resins (e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, styrene) co-valently bonded with stable solid-state additives. The resulting materials are able to provide permanent ESD protection with an unparalleled ability to neutralized corrosive gases for extended periods of time. The plastic itself acts as a active barrier, reacting with and permanently neutralizing corrosive or reactive gases. Other characteristics include: non-outgasing packaging without humidity dependence, low ionic contamination which makes material clean room compatible. It can be formed into bags, tubing, sheets, bubble-pack, foam, thermofrormed and injection molded trays, IC carriers, tape-and-reel, etc. ESD and corrosion protection is provided for components, circuit packs, assembled systems, etc. Protection from corrosion, tarnish, oxidation and degradation by atmospheric H2S, COS, Nitrous Groups, Ozone and HCl is provided for all forms of silver, copper, and their alloys such as the stock metals, electrical connectors, bus bars for electric power transmission, the electroplated metals, jewelry, and household silverware, digital data (CD, CDR, DVD) are a small sampling of the potential applications of these materials.
