For many year the power cooling industry has used assembled heat sinks (epoxy bonded, metal-to-metal or other) to increase surface cooling area in restricted volume, forced cooling applications. Increases in heat flux density have resulted in many designers questioning the effects of heat spreading within the assembled heat sinks and the resulting effects on electronics cooling. The work described herein is the result of two sets of numerical analyses and empirical tests examining conductive heat-spreading effects as it relates to the overall thermal performance of the sinks. These tests and calculations compare equivalent profile heat sinks made using different manufacturing techniques tested under identical test conditions.
