In mid-2007, the nuclear utilities in Texas approached Texas A&M University asking for assistance in educating and training the nuclear workforce of the future to meet impending retirements at their nuclear stations as well as providing a workforce for the new units planned to be built in the State. Our response was the establishment of the Nuclear Power Institute (NPI), which was approved by the Board of Regents in December 2007. Following a road map provided by the utilities and funded initially by the Texas Workforce Commission, NPI established educational programs directed toward 2-year community colleges and 4-year universities to provide the highly educated and trained workforce necessary to safely operate the existing and future nuclear stations in the State. This presentation will summarize the activities of the Nuclear Power Institute in establishing and nurturing educational programs to address the needs of the nuclear utilities in the State.
