The paper presents the CFD study of multiphase flow characteristics in a large side-entering stirred tank used as WFGD slurry tank. The tank was equipped with three symmetrical side-entering novel axial hydrofoil type impellers called FloMax. In order to achieve this, a commercial CFD software package (Fluent) was used. Multiple reference frame (MRF) approach was used in the investigation included flow fields of single phase and gas-liquid two phases. The results show that for the single phase, the impeller generates large circulating flow which is weak at the upper area on the vertical plane, while on the horizontal plane, there is a typical jet stream from the impeller with two circulating flow existing near the jet stream. For the gas-liquid two phase flow, the gas completely change the flow field of the liquid, and the gas distribution is not uniform. In order to get uniform gas distribution, proper gas distributor is needed. The power number of side-entering impeller is nearly the same as top-entering impeller with full baffle condition. For gas-liquid flow, the power number is much higher than single phase flow.
