A facile template method (self-assembly combined with hydrothermal crystallization techniques) was adopted to prepare a novel MCM-22 hollow nestlike spheres (simplified as MCM-22-HS hereafter) of about 6-10 μm, which were assembled by many MCM-22 zeolite wafers, with carbon black microspheres as core template. The MCM-22-HS exhibited a unique spherical geometrical shape with hollow structure which was entirely distinct from the conventional MCM-22 morphology. The MCM-22-HS was modified to form Mo/HMCM-22-HS catalyst which exhibited good catalytic performance in methane dehydroaromatization (MDA) reaction due to presence of hollow cage structure. The demonstrated route may be extended to synthesis of other type zeolite with unusual structure and properties.
