A new type of composite membrane based on ionic liquid and polymer has been fabricated by loading 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (bmimPF6) in polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrix on a polypropylene (PP) porous support membrane using solvent evaporation method. The membrane was characterized by XRD and SEM analysis, and the CO2/N2 separation performance of the membranes with different bmimPF6 loadings was examined with pure gas permeation experiment. The membrane presents increasing CO2 permeance and CO2/N2 selectivity with the increase of bmimPF6 loadings as well as high long-term stability at cross-membrane pressure difference of 0.4 MPa, resulting from the microphase separation in the composite membrane as verified by the SEM and XRD studies.
