The sodium alginate dense membrane was prepared.This membrane preferentially permeated water from the aqueous methanol、 ethanol、 iso-propanol、 acetone, dioxane and tetrahydrafuran solutions by pervaporation. The values of total permeation rate and separation factor for organic solvent/water systems were very high. For example, the permeate flux was 2489g/m~2.hr, and separation factor →∞ at 55°C (for THF concentration in feed was 80 wt.%); the permeate flux was 2862g/m~2.hr. and separation factor was 39996 at 60 °C (for dioxane concentration in feed was 80 wt.%). The total permeation rate varies with the temperature in according with an Arrhenius relationship, while comparing two kinds of sodium alginate samples. It was observed that the chemical structure of the membrane plays an important role in determining pervaporation phenomena.
