There have been tremendous changes in product development processes in recent years. A significant increase in the outsourcing of components necessitates increased coordination and collaboration within and across enterprises. Collaborative product design is becoming a reality due to the rapid development of the Internet and powerful computers. Synchronously, with emerging new techniques and device, reverse engineering is being widely adopted by more and more manufacturers. This paper presents a rudimentary product modeling system in collaborative reverse engineering methodology, with particular emphasis on triangle B-spline-based surface reconstruction, hierarchical product information model, JXTA-based P2P collaborative network infrastructure. A prototype is developed to support CSG operation on mesh model, feature tree editing, and collaborative model modification which is performed by cooperation between document co-editing space and VRML visualization within geographically dispersed design teams.
