Light weight reinforced thermoplastic (LWRT) composites are broadly used by different industries, including automotive, building and construction, office furniture, heavy truck, recreational vehicle and, potentially, aerospace, among others. LWRT composites can have the classic advantages of low coefficient of thermal expansion, high strength-to-weight ratio, high impact with ductile failure, good acoustic performance, intrinsic mold and rot resistance, relatively low cost part forming, and easy installation. Recent developments in LWRT composites add more functions to this material, such as improved flame retardancy, improved sound absorption, and low toxicity and smoke release. In this paper, LWRT composites with two families of new formulations will be reported. In addition to traditional physical properties and mechanical properties of the materials, acoustic performance tested by ASTM E1050 and ASTM C423-17, flame retardant (FR) performance tested by ASTM E84, FMVSS 302 and SAE J369, smoke density performance tested by ASTM E662, and gas toxicity performance tested by BSS 7239 will be discussed. The comparison between standard LWRT composite and these newly development LWRT composite materials indicates another step forward in LWRT composite development.
