AVL has applied for several years a successful development tool especially in engine and aftertreatment system development for the derivation and evaluation of durability programs. The so-called AVL Load Matrix Methodology provides a quantification of the potential of the durability program based on a systematic approach. By expanding the development of competence in the transmission area this methodology has now been included in the transmission development process. In this paper, the creation of an optimized test program for the endurance testing of an innovative commercial vehicle transmission is described. The main part of the work consists of a complete system analysis to identify potential component failure mode combinations and an assessment of all available customer information with statistical methods. The optimization of the test program for all relevant component failure modes is represented accordingly in terms of reliability and durability and variants for testing are identified. Thus existing "traditional" programs can be questioned and extended for specific design and customer inquiries Using this methodology, a further step has been performed to improve quality, increase efficiency and reduce costs by optimizing testing.
