The cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms are a growing threat to human health and ecosystem viability. Among the cyanotoxins that are currently receiving great attention is the potent inhibitor of protein synthesis, cylindrospermopsin (CYN). In this study, we investigated the photochemical fate of CYN in water environments by UV 254 nm advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), namely UV/H_2O_2, UV/S_2O_8~(2-) and/or UV/HSO_5~-. It was found that the degradation efficiency of CYN generally followed UV/S_2O_8~(2-) > UV/HSO_5~- > UV/H_2O_2. UV/H_2O_2 process was inhibited much more significantly in the presence of natural organic matter and alkalinity.
