Pumped storage plant is to develop energy conservation, improve the quality of power system operation important measures. Changing operating conditions of pump turbine unit including stable operation and the transition process is much more complex than conventional hydropower. Transient of hydraulic machine installations is one of the important decision-making process in pumped storage plant, thereby increasing the accuracy and applicability of the calculation of significance. Internal character analysis calculation of the hydraulic machine installation is a new theory of the transients, it can calculate without full-hydraulic machinery characteristic curves. This article describes the internal character analysis theory in the large pumped storage plant hydraulic calculation of the transients, and discusses some key issues to be addressed, and future direction of development.
