Welcome to the 2011 IEEE Workshop on Computational Intelligence in Biometrics and Identity Management organized by the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society. The workshop will provide the attendees a valuable opportunity to meet professional colleagues on a personal level. The topics to be covered reflect the depth and breadth of the current research effort and range of applications through presentations, special sessions, and tutorials. Familiar issues such as accuracy, robustness, security and privacy continue to be addressed but under the myriad conditions that come with the new requirements of novel applications. Biometrics remains refreshingly open to extension and re-invention by the application of novel techniques including computational intelligence techniques derived from areas such as artificial intelligence, neural networks, fuzzy logic, and evolutionary computing. Novel biometrics, novel techniques, and novel applications in novel environments mean that we should all have a lot to learn and discuss in the workshop format.
