We studied impact of different EHRS (Exhaust Heat Recovery System) on engine warm up and fuel economy on a prius III. The EHRS recovers exhaust energy and tranfers it to coolant. On the prius, warmed coolant from engine outlet is routed to EHRS, and from EHRS to cabin heater then back to the engine. Hybrid thermal engine may stop and electric motor drives the wheels, at some conditions in order to save fuel. One of this condition is a targeted cooling temperature: this is why EHRS can help saving fuel by increasing coolant temperature, thus enable more frequent pure electric drive.
