Development of a High-Temperature and High-Pressure Vessel for Laminar Flame Speed Measurements

There is an interest to study the effects of high temperatures and high pressures on the burning velocity of common combustible gas mixtures. To this end, a new constant-volume facility to measure laminar flame speeds of gaseous mixtures at elevated temperatures and pressures has been designed and built. This heated vessel also broadens the experimental field of study in the authors' laboratory to low vapor pressure fuels and other vaporized liquids. The new facility is capable of performing flame speed experiments at an initial pressure as high as 30 atm and an initial temperature up to 600 K. To heat the stainless steel vessel, a unique heating jacket was designed to enclose the vessel and maintain a spatially uniform, temporally constant gas temperature for an extended period of time. Several methane-air experiments at atmospheric pressure were performed that show good agreement with previous methane-air flame speed measurements at 298 and 350 K.
