摘要

To meet users’ quality demands and needs for production cost savings to realize high quality slabs, the transitionpart of slab surface defects was improved by electromagnetic stirring (EMS). In this study, analysis of theinfluence of molten steel flow on homogenization of initial solidification continuously cast slabs was conducted. Byapplying EMS to produce middle carbon steel, it was confirmed that EMS remarkably improves the uniformity ofsolidification shell thickness over the slab width. We discussed the influence of molten steel flow on temperature inthe mold, heat flux to the mold plate, and the frequency of nucleus formation. In the large-scale application tocommercial production, EMS contributes to the reduction of surface defects originating from longitudinal cracks.
