In previous years, productivity was the main focus forthe steel industry as the market was booming and thesteel producers were output oriented. Situationchanged and the market downturn forced the industryto work on the efficiency of the equipment and thesteel producers became cost oriented. Furthermore,more and more countries worldwide areimplementing new rules and regulations not onlyconcerning energy efficiency and CO_2 emissions, butalso with respect to hazardous off gas emissions.The right approach of SIEMENS VAI MetalsTechnologies is the EAF QUANTUM ~(TM).This new furnace concept stands for minimumconversion costs, maximized output andenvironmental compliance. Through the utilization ofthe furnace offgas during the heat cycle, 100% ofscrap can be preheated prior to final melting in thefurnace vessel. This means considerable energy andcost savings with the substantial reduction in tap-totaptimes (< 33 minutes).In combination with an adequate hot heel, the meltingphase is reduced to pure flat bath operation withlowest flicker. With an optimized and patent pendingtapping system called FAST (furnace advanced slagfreetapping system), a renewed variant of scrapcharging and retaining technology, latest analyzingtechnologies and a revolutionary design of theoffgas-processing system this furnace is the meltingaggregate of the future. An energy consumption of280kWh/t in combination with reduced consumptionsof oxygen and fuel stands for itself.
