Finite element analysis of a through hole on a ceramic pressure housing

Ceramics are promising materials for use in pressure housings because they have higher compressive strength than titanium alloys. However, because their tensile strengths are typically only a fraction of the compressive strength, common design methods for pressure housings of metals are not directly applicable to ceramic pressure housings. Results of finite element analysis (FEA) of a through hole on a ceramic pressure housing, which is used for putting underwater connector, are presented herein. A single through hole is assumed at the top of a semisphere. The results suggest a basic guideline for designing through holes.
