SIMULATING ETHICAL DILEMMAS: TEACHING ETHICS THROUGH IMMERSIVE VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS

Understanding ethical values in the areas of computing is becoming essential to the credibility of professional and academic programs related to technology. In this paper, the authors present a pilot trial to illustrate how an immersive virtual environment can be used as a teaching tool in an ethics class by simulating real life ethical dilemmas. We present our preliminary findings on the effects of an immersive learning environment on student engagement as well as the particular constructed scenarios used in the course. We then conclude with our final remarks and future research direction for using virtual worlds for teaching computer ethics.
