The kind of electrical contact under consideration in this communication is that which is incorporated in circuits in which the currents are of the order of amperes and the steady potential differences of the order of volts. The relay contacts of telecommunication engineering provide a typical example. A feature of the behaviour of such contacts which has been long studied is the transfer of metal from one electrode of the contact to the other at each operation.
