Fuel cells and other clean energy technologies currently under development throughout thernUnited States with funding support from the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Fossil Energy offerrnthe opportunity for widespread use to meet future energy demands throughout the world. The Officernof Fossil Energy is supporting efforts to advance fuel cells, gas turbines, hybrid fuel cell –gas turbinernsystems, and clean coal technologies in a number of different programs. These programs includernthe Vision 21 program seeking to eliminate environmental concerns associated with the use of coalrnfor production of electricity and value added products. Tubular solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) arernbeing advanced by Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation with distributed power generationrnsystems being commercialized in the 2003-4 timeframe. FuelCell Energy, Inc. has developed moltenrncarbonate fuel cells (MCFC) with commercial production to begin in the 2002-3 timeframe. ThernSolid State Energy Conversion Alliance (SECA) is supporting the development of modular, integratedrnsolid-state fuel cells and fuel processors to dramatically reduce the cost of fuel cell technology asrnapplied to stationary power, military and transportation applications. Hybrid fuel cell – gasrnturbine systems, with extraordinary fuel-to-electricity conversion efficiency, are also being advancedrnto meet future energy needs. The current presentation will describe these clean energyrntechnologies and describe their potential to efficiently and with minimal environmental impact meetrngrowing energy demands throughout the world.
