Characterisation of Road-deposited Sediment in Different Areas of ZhenJiang, China: Particle-size Distribution and Chemical Compositions

Road-deposited sediments (RDS) are an important environmental medium which particulates accumulate potentially pollutants, ultimately posing a threat to urban water-bodies. Data from 62 samples from four land use are analyzed for a selection of RDS characteristics, including particle-size distribution, pH, chemical oxygen demand and organic matter, nitrogen, metal and phosphorus content. The results presented that the samples are found to contain predominantly fine particles (60-80%,less than 250um), the mean pH value of RDS is 9.04 with the range between 7.10 and 11.56; the mean content of organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus are 5.62%, 4.56mg/g and 3.85mg/g respectively; Zn, Pb and Cu shows the highest mean concentration of 0.687, 0.589 and 0.158mg/g respectively. Subsequently, through the method of the correlative analysis of chemical compositions and organic matter in RDS, the chemical compositions are strongly correlated to organic matter which showed organic matter was the carrier of chemical compositions in RDS of Zhenjiang. Distribution of chemical compositions in the various grain size fractions can be linked to different areas characteristics.
