Special traits of Fagopyrum might have taken place in the upper Min River Valley. There are many different species in the upper Min River Valley. The seed storage proteins of some common and Tartary buckwheat collected there were studied with SDS-PAGE under reducing and non-reducing conditions. The results indicate that there were legumin-like seed storage proteins, which change after reduction, as well as vicilin-like storage proteins, which remain unchanged after reduction. As for Fagopyrum esculentum, the proteins of different molecular weights distribute continuously; While the proteins of F. tartaricum could approximately be divided into three groups: high (100-80kD), medium (60-35kD), and low (below 30kD). The proteins of similar molecular weight to high-molecular weight glutenin subunit (HMW-GS) of wheat, and abundant medium proteins have been found in all buckwheat. SDS-PAGE under reducing conditions showed that the electrophoresis results of F. tartaricum, F. tataricum var. alata and four-arrised F. tartaricum (all from Heishui) are very similar, and the degree of protein diversity of F. esculentum (from Heishui county) was a little bit slighter than that of F. esculentum collected from Ma'erkang. It is likely that this is a result of long-term artificial selection. Protein component analysis combined with self-cross experiment showed that F. tataricum var. alata is one of the varieties of F. tartaricum, which could be stably inherited while four-arrised F. tartaricum is merely one phenotype variation of F. tartaricum.
