ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES THEIR IMPACT ON SUSTAINABILITY OF AGRO BASED INDIAN PULP PAPER INDUSTRY

The small scale agro based Indian pulp and paper sector is playing a key role in meeting the pulp and paper demand of the country and the sector as such is contributing about 30% of the total production of paper and paper products of the country. These mills are currently facing imminent threat of closure due to various environmental issues associated with these mills due to use of obsolete technology / machinery The paper highlights these environmental issues, possible approach/control measures and also technologies / process developed by Central Pulp & Paper Research Institute (CPPRI), Saharanpur, India to make these mills cost competitive and environmentally compatible / sustainable.
