Refining is the only unit operation in stock preparation that changes the physical properties of the fiber. Therefore, it is extremely important that the process be understood as well as possible in order to give the papermaker maximum control over the primary variable of fiber characteristics. Low consistency refiners are available in three basic configurations: disc, conical and cylindrical. Each configuration shares the common elements of rotor, stator and refining surfaces, but how these elements are designed and assembled can have a dramatic impact on the results that are achieved with each refiner. This session will review innovations in the application, design and implementation of low consistency refiners for stock preparation.
