THE CEMENT INDUSTRY SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE WITHIN THE WORLD BUSINESS COUNCIL FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The Cement Industry Sustainability Initiative is a joint campaign by ten cement companies operating internationally, which are collaborating in the Cement Working Group within the WBCSD. In order to discover which subject areas are relevant for sustainable development of the cement industry, a study was initiated and commissioned by the working group. As the second step, the companies have developed an action plan for sustainable development. It describes concrete measures for sustainability, which are to be implemented jointly with the participant companies in the coming years. The scope of the subjects ranges from safety at work through the use of raw materials and fuels to climatic protection. The action plan was presented to the public in July 2002. An assessment of what has and has not been achieved will be made in the form of an interim report in 2005 at the latest.
