Coordinating Lead-Time Quotation and Inventory Planning in Hybrid Make-to-Order/Make-to-Stock Environments

Quoting short and reliable lead-times is becoming increasingly important in optimizing the value-chain. Traditional research in lead-time quotation considers the problem in a cost minimization perspective and does not consider order acceptance as part of the decision. In this research, the coordination of reliable lead-time quotation, scheduling, and order acceptance is studied from a profit maximization perspective. A decision model is proposed and a computational analysis is conducted to determine the benefits of lead-time flexibility and flexibility to partially fulfill orders, under various demand conditions and inventory holding options. Results show that the demand conditions and different flexibility have an impact on the manufacturer’s profitability in several ways.
