A number of metallurgical measures have been carried out within the last 10 years to improve process capability and reduce production costs for the production of bearing steels. Examples of improved metallurgical techniques are the composition control of the top slag and the consistent development of continuous casting techniques. As a result, bearing steel characteristics such as oxygen- and titanium content as well as macrocoleanness show a continuous improvement within the last years. New efforts have been made to improve volumtric tasting of macrocoleanness and characterize the size, distribution and composition of nonmetallic inclusions.
