Lajes Field has had elevated levels of various parameters in their drinking water for the past 15 years. The purpose of the project was to sample and analyze potable water samples from over 1300 spigoits and faucets located in family housing, transit quarters and dormitories on the base. A field laboratory was established and all samples were screened for lead using Hach's LeadTrakcircleR test kit. Approximately 10 percent of the screened samples were sent for confirmation analysis via furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometery. Correlation studies were performed to validate field screening and solidify recommendations on human health risk and the need for remedial action. Only 7 percent of the confirmation analyses were subject to question. Overall, the field laboratory proved to be extremely cost effective by delivering analytical data in near "real-time" while reducing analysis costs by nearly 75 percent.
