Design and Preliminary Testing of a System that Integrates Relational Database, GIS, and Web Browser Technologies to Manage Environmental Data

Management of environmental data from a large number of spatially distributed stations monitoring various pollutants needs to be performed in a manner that facilitates easy retrieval and selective querying. The availability of data management tools that meet the above requirements should be of help to end-users from the scientific, academic, and regulatory communities. In the current effort, recent advances in distributed computing hardware technologies (i.e. Client-Server systems, "Clustering" of servers and workstations in "virtual" parallel configurations, etc.) as well as in software tools for information management (i.e. Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) like SYBASE and ORACLE, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) such as ARC/INFO, and Web Browsers) are used to develop tools for spatial querying of databases on-line, for performing graphical and statistical analyses, etc.
