perimenter and off-Site air monitoring were performed during the remedial action at a Superfund Site in northwest Arkansas. The remedial action consisted of soil excavation, pre-treatment by dry sieving and off-site incineration. Air monitoring was conducted for total suspended particulates (TSP), pentachlorophenol, carcinogenic polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, and 2, 3, 8-TCDD dioxin equivalents (dioxins). Selection of samples for chemical analyses followed a strategy based upon TSP levels, metheorologic data, and project schedule. The sampling strategy focused on the selection of the chemical samples reasonably expected to contain the highest level of contaminants based upon TSP levels and avoided the overly conservative approach of analzying all chemical smples collected at the Site. By utilizing this strategy, estimated analtical costs of air monitoring were reduced by 80 percent.
