Methyl tertiary butyl ehter (MTBE) is manufactured by the chemical reaction of methanol and isobutylene, and is use by almost every major oil company in at least some of their gasolines. In the pyrolysis furnaces, MTBE will generally crack to methanol and isobutylene. Methanol poses a problem for olefins units in that it will contaminate the propylene product. To reduce the impact of contaminants on the process and to assure safe, reliable operation, Lyondell has developed an extensive feedstock acceptance procedure. Feedstock specifictions have been developed for all types of feed processed in the Olefins units, including NGLs, purchased liquids by pipeline or barge, and non-crackign feedstocks.
