Engineering and optimization of asphalt mixtures in laboratory is very important to achieve the desired performance of the pavements and to reduce the likelihood of expensive premature failures. Since there are several variables in play to produce an optimal mix, identifying an optimal design would require a systematic evaluation of innumerable combinations. However, such an effort is not feasible in a laboratory setting using conventional experimental methods. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using Bullet Physics engine to virtually compact the asphalt mixtures in a gyratory compactor. The model developed in this study can then be used to conduct broad parametric analyses, and together with computational tools, can serve as a screening tool for the optimization of asphalt mixtures.
