The introduction of electronic flow measurement technology revolutionized how the natural gas business operated,allowing for far more accurate measurement through accounting for more variables than previously possible and eliminating much uncertainty.Shortly after that revolution,radio frequency(RF) communication technologies were introduced which allowed the gathering of measurement data to be done remotely and autonomously.Problems with a meter run could be diagnosed from an office,and measurement technicians could spend more of their time maintaining and optimizing their equipment and less time collecting data from it.SCADA in Oil and Gas has since become an indispensable tool,which inherently relies on wireless communication to exchange data with wellsites and measurement points that may be miles from the nearest wired communication infrastructure.While many different wireless technologies exist to serve different purposes,the Oil and Gas industry has historically been dominated by frequency-hopping spread-spectrum(FHSS) radios.This paper will focus on FHSS technology; how it works,how radio networks using it are properly designed,and what to expect in the future of wireless technology will all be discussed.
