Liquid crystal (LC) alignments using circularly rubbed and the thermally-treated linearly rubbed PVK films are separately reported. The alignment anchoring to LCs with their director axis perpendicular to the direction of rubbing can be induced by mechanically rubbed PVK layer, and switched toward the rubbing direction by thermal treatment.
