Asthma Slide Rule for School Children: Managing Physical Activities during Air Pollution Episodes

Rapid urbanization, increased automobile traffic, and regional climate change have contributed significantly to a reduction in air quality in many communities throughout the United States. Epidemiological studies demonstrate a strong correlation between increasing levels of ambient air pollution and mounting asthma illness in children. Poor air quality increases the risk and frequency of asthma episodes which impacts a child's ability to learn. To assist schools to better manage this health problem, a new instrument called the Asthma Slide Rule was developed. The purpose of this new tool is to provide a practical instrument for teachers, school nurses, coaches, and parents to better protecting school children during air pollution episodes. The new instrument has now been adopted by environmental and public health agencies for use in schools and public health offices throughout the State of Idaho.
