jiHODES PENINSULA AND HOMEBUSH BAY REMEDIATION BY THERMAL TREATMENT IN SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA

The Rhodes Peninsula and Homebush Bay area is located 12 kilometres (km) west of the Sydney central business district, close to the geographic centre of greater Sydney, a city of 4 million people. The area is 3 km from the 2000 Olympics site, which was itself a major contaminated site of over 400 hectares (ha), which was remediated to make it suitable for the Games. Industrial activities commenced on approximately 41 ha of the Rhodes Peninsula in the late 19th century with lead-based and much later polymer-based paint manufacturing by Berger Paints. The 20th century saw the establishment of hydrocarbon based chemical production by CSR Chemicals, Timbrol Limited (Timbrol), later to become the Union Carbide Australia (Union Carbide) chemical plant, and the adjacent Allied Feeds grain storage and milling facility.
