A Study on the Estimation of Calculation Methodology on Greenhouse Gas Generated Nonferrous Metal Industrial Process in Korea

Kyoto protocol came into force on Feb. 16, 2005, but the research activity about reduction of GHGs (Greenhouse Gases) is brisk internationally including Korea. In this study, we performed some research that calculates generation rate of GHG at nonferrous metal industry, such as, zinc, lead, copper and Nickel produced in Korea. Calculations on the emission of CO_2 were performed around the process emission. We did not calculate the general emissions that are relevant from stationary and mobile emissions. CO_2 is the prime GHG generated in a production process from the four types of nonferrous metal produced in the domestic industry. In the case of zinc and lead, we recognized that CO_2 as GHG is generated in the deoxidization process using coal powder as the deoxidizer. Reporting on the generation rate of GHG to UNFCCC (United Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change) is applied to the whole process generating GHG from direct and indirect emissions. It is estimated that the emission from such sources can be expected to be less than 5% of national emission. Priority on the emissions from nonferrous metal industry is less than that from other sources in Korea, but we consider that the result of this research would provide important data to subsequently construct robust GHG inventory. Based on this study one can, therefore, seek and estimate the GHG calculation methodology generated from the production process of nonferrous metal produced from the domestic industry.
