Combustion of hazardous waste by incineration is often done without energy recovery.. This paper will explore the use of fuel, and minimization of that use, in incinerators. The title, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, is particularly interesting in today's world of increasing purchased energy prices. The following issues will be explored:oRefractory and insulation: heat losses oCombustor operation: operating parameters and design o Heat input: planning waste feed to optimize fuel usage o Combustion air: controls and design to minimize excesso Electricity: a hidden operating cost The focus of the paper will be on practical issues useful for both existing incinerators and design of future equipment. Case studies will be highlighted to illustrate the potential impact of thorough process engineering.
